PHIVOLCS records 337 earthquakes at Kanlaon Volcano

PHIVOLCS records 337 earthquakes at Kanlaon Volcano

The seismic activity persisted at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island as 337 more volcanic earthquakes were logged since Tuesday night, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Wednesday.

From 12 a.m. on Tuesday to 12 a.m. on Wednesday, PHIVOLCS said Kanlaon Volcano also emitted a “voluminous” 1,000-meter tall plume which drifted southeast.

The volcano also generated 9,985 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux on Tuesday, while its edifice remained inflated.

PHIVOLCS chief Teresito Bacolcol said Tuesday that Kanlaon Volcano may have an eruption following a series of volcanic earthquakes.

Kanlaon Volcano is currently at Alert Level 2 due to an “increased unrest” following its explosive eruption on June 3. PHIVOLCS said that the current seismic activity may lead to eruptive unrest and an increase in the alert level.

PHIVOLCS also warned that entry into the volcano’s 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone, and flying any aircraft close to it are prohibited.

Sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may also occur. — Giselle Ombay/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
