Series of volcanic-tectonic earthquakes recorded in Kanlaon on Sept.9

State volcanologists noted increased seismic activity at Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental on Monday night, just three months after it erupted in June.

In an advisory issued at 11:30 p.m.,  PHIVOLCS said that Alert Level 2 or a state of increasing unrest, prevails over Kanlaon, “but that current seismic activity may lead to eruptive unrest and an increase in the Alert Level.” 

“A total of 25 volcano-tectonic or VT earthquakes have been recorded by the Kanlaon Volcano Network since 8:32 AM this morning, with the last 22 having been recorded beginning 10:35 PM this evening,” said PHIVOLCS.

“Canlaon City, Negros Oriental residents report that at least five of these earthquakes were felt. VT earthquakes are generated by rock fracturing processes and the increase in VT activity may possibly precede eruptive activity.”

Kanlaon Volcano’s  eruption last June 3 lasted 6 minutes and emitted plumes that rose to 5,000 meters. 

Entry into the volcano's four-kilometer permanent danger zone remained prohibited. Flying of aircraft close to the volcano is also barred.

Residents nearby are also advised to cover their mouth and nose with a damp clean cloth, or dusk mask. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
