CHR probes possible human rights abuses during KOJC raid

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) said it is monitoring developments and conducting an investigation on possible human rights violations committed during the implementation of the warrant of arrest against Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) founder Pastor Apollo Quiboloy.

According to a "24 Oras" report on Tuesday, the commission is looking into whether the police operations are breaching people's rights to religious freedom by barring entry into their cathedral.

“The CHR further stresses that the police operation should only involve the implementation of the arrest warrant, not a search warrant, and must always be conducted in accordance with the law, applicable rules, and human rights principles,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the CHR also urged Quiboloy to face the charges and for the KOJC members to allow the police to execute the warrant.

“We urge Quiboloy to honor his statement that he ‘will face [the charges against him] anywhere, anytime in a court of law,’” it continued.

“Likewise, we remind the KOJC members not to obstruct the police in their duty to execute the warrant of arrest. We urge both parties to avoid any actions that could prolong the search for Quiboloy and his co-accused,” the statement added.

Earlier, the CHR also issued a statement reminding the Philippine National Police to “follow the judicial process” in executing their warrants.

They also encouraged both the PNP and KOJC to “remain calm and cooperate fully with the legal proceedings, in the interest of justice and peace.”

“The Commission reminds the Philippine National Police to exercise maximum tolerance and to ensure the safety of everyone, especially the children,” the agency said.

"The Commission reiterates to the members of KOJC the importance of respecting state forces, allowing them to carry out their duty, and refraining from any actions that may escalate tensions or obstruct the legal process,” CHR added. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
