3 hurt due to 'rido' in Basilan

Three people were injured after tension sparked between two warring families in Sumisip, Basilan.

According to the 101st Infantry Brigade, the ‘rido’ or family feud between the two families in Barangay Etub-Etub resulted in a firefight.

The military said the rido involved the families of the incumbent and former barangay chairman.

“Parang may inabangan yung tatlong tao. Wounded yung tatlo pero wala namang namatay. Noong isang araw, may firefight na naman na nangyari doon, and every time pumupunta ang kasundaluhan to pacify, siyempre nag-aalisan lang. Ito nga yung pinipilit natin sanang ma-resolve, ma-settle pero yun nga, very challenging,” 101st Infantry Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Alvin Luzon, said.

However, authorities said the incident was an isolated case and should not be a reason for residents in the province to worry.

The military added that the strategies implemented to put an end to ‘rido’ have been intensified.

Because of the efforts of government forces, only five of the 38 ‘rido’ cases recorded since August 2023 remain.

“Kung hindi naman natin ma-zero ‘yan, we will minimize itong mga ‘to. Very contributory to sa mga violence, conflicts dito sa province. The people here are safe. Yung security situation dito, at all-time, very peaceful. We are determined na i-sustain ito,” Luzon added. —GMA Regional TV
