Alleged mistreatment of lion at zoo in Vigan, Ilocos Sur condemned

Alleged mistreatment of lion at zoo in Vigan, Ilocos Sur condemned

An animal welfare group has slammed the alleged mistreatment of a white lion at Baluarte Zoo in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

According to reports received by the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF), the lion named “King” was seen in a video being kicked in its feet for a photo opportunity even when it appeared tired, sleepy, and uncomfortable.

AKF said a worldwide campaign against wildlife selfies and photo opportunities already existed.

We are exploiting this animal na tinatawag nating wildlife,” AKF Program Director, Atty. Heidi Caguiao, said.

Zoo owner, Governor Chavit Singson, has condemned the incident and has already terminated the employee who was seen in the video.

Singson also ordered all staff members of the zoo to undergo training again. The management of the zoo and the treatment of the animals will also be improved.

The management is also studying how it can have photos taken with animals in the ‘most ethical manner.’

AKF, however, is calling for a stop to the practice of photo opportunities with the animals.

Huwag natin silang i-patronize,” Caguiao said.

Those who mistreat any wildlife will face criminal charges under the Animal Welfare Act (RA 8485). — GMA Regional TV
