Aftershocks of May 3 quake hit Balangiga, Eastern Samar and Abuyog, Leyte —PHIVOLCS


Aftershocks of up to magnitude 5.0 were recorded in Balangiga, Eastern Samar and Abuyog, Leyte on Monday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) said.

PHIVOLCS chief Teresito Bacolcol told GMA News Online that the tremors were aftershocks from the magnitude 5.8 earthquake that hit Albuyog on May 3.

“Aftershocks po ito noong (These were aftershocks from the) magnitude 5.8 May 3, 2024 event,” he said in a message.

In its bulletin, PHIVOLCS said a magnitude 5.0 earthquake hit Balangiga, Eastern Samar 1:53 p.m., which had a  depth of focus of 10 kilometers and was tectonic in origin. 

Aftershocks are expected but there is no expected damage, according to PHIVOLCS. 

For instrumental intensities, the PHIVOLCS said Intensity II was felt in Hinundayan and Hinunangan, Southern Leyte as well as in Dulag and Abuyog in Leyte.

Earlier at 2:16 p.m., a magnitude 3.0 earthquake was also recorded in the area.

Meanwhile in Abuyog, Leyte, a magnitude 4.9 earthquake was also felt at 1:22 p.m. It had a depth of focus of two kilometers and was tectonic in origin.

Intensity III was experienced in Hinundayan and Hinunangan in Southern Leyte as well as in Dulag, Javier, and Abuyog in Leyte.

Intensity II was felt in Alangalang, Leyte.

Intensity I was also felt in Albuera, and Hilongos in Leyte; Basey in Samar; as well as in San Juan and Sogod in Southern Leyte.

No damage or aftershocks are expected.

After this, several earthquakes were also detected in Abuyog including a magnitude 4.4 earthquake at 1:28 p.m. and a magnitude 3.7 earthquake at 1:23 p.m.—AOL, GMA Integrated News
