BI launches document examination lab at Mactan-Cebu Int’l Airport

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has opened a forensic document laboratory at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport to detect fraudulent travel documents.

In a statement, the BI said the laboratory includes a video spectral comparator donated by the Australian government.

“The new equipment provides advanced forensic inspection, including the analysis of watermarks, microprints, and other security features critical in identifying counterfeit documents,” the BI said in a statement Thursday.

The BI added that the Australian government also provided specialized training to immigration personnel.

“The opening of this laboratory is a crucial step in our ongoing efforts to combat document fraud. With this new laboratory, our ability to intercept fraudulent documents is significantly enhanced, ensuring greater security at our borders,” said BI Anti-Fraud Section Chief Marivic Beltrano.

The other document examination laboratories are located in BI’s main office in Intramuros, Manila as well as in other airports such as the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Clark International Airport, and the Davao International Airport. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BM, GMA Integrated News
