1 killed, 2 hurt as steel bridge collapses in Davao City

A 19-year-old steelman died while his two co-workers were injured after a steel bridge under construction collapsed in Panacan, Davao City.

Police said the three were working on the bridge when the braces of the column gave in and hit them.

The fatality was identified as JP Oftana while the workers injured were identified as Ian Jarol, 25, and Rogelio Roxas, 28.

Because of the incident, the operation was stopped temporarily.

Police are investigating whether the workers were wearing safety gears at the time of the incident.

The contractor of the project has yet to issue a statement, as of this writing.

“Sa mga construction workers, safety first and atong pagatan-awon kay ang atong pagpaningkamot wala na kung ang atong kinabuhi ma unsa. Sa mga contractors pud, siguraduhon nato nga ang atong mga trabahante safety gyud kanunay, atong i-monitor, i-supervise,” Davao City Police Office (DCPO) spokesperson, Captain Hazel Tuazon, said. —GMA Regional TV
