Lamitan City in Basilan declared free of Abu Sayyaf
Government officials have declared Lamitan City in Basilan as Abu Sayyaf Group-free on Tuesday.
In a ceremony held in Lamitan City, 46 loose firearms including high-powered and low-powered firearms, as well as a hand grenade, were voluntarily surrendered by barangay chairpersons, symbolizing the community's commitment to maintain peace and security.
"Today, we celebrate not just the absence of a threat, but the presence of a hopeful future for Lamitan City," Basilan Governor Jim Hataman-Salliman said in his inspirational message, according to a press release from the Philippine Army.
"Together, we have shown that peace is possible. And together will build a future filled with opportunity and prosperity," he added.
Brigadier General Alvin Luzon, commander of the Philippine Army's 101st Infantry “Three Red Arrows” Brigade, said the collective efforts of the local government, security forces, and the community made it possible for the city to be free of the rebel group.
“The declaration of Lamitan City as ASG-free is a testament to our united efforts. We have faced numerous challenges, but our collective resolve has brought us to this day. We are committed to continuing our mission to ensure peace and security in this city,” he said.
Lamitan City Mayor Roderick Furigay delivered his State of the City report during the city's founding anniversary celebrations.
The event was capped with the signing of a commitment to uphold Lamitan City's ASG-free status.
Aside from Salliman, Vice Governor Yusop Alano, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and Sangguniang Panglungsod, officers of the Army's 18th Infantry Battalion, clan representatives, and community leaders also joined the event. —KG, GMA Integrated News
