PHIVOLCS: Kanlaon remains at Alert Level 2

PHIVOLCS: Kanlaon remains at Alert Level 2

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Thursday clarified that Kanlaon Volcano remains at Alert Level 2.

“This is to remind the general public that the DOST-PHIVOLCS has NOT raised the alert status of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island,” the statement read.

Under Alert Level 2 or increasing unrest, magmatic eruption is possible and other areas within five kilometers of the active vent may be included in the danger zone.

Elevated levels of any of the following parameters: volcanic earthquake, temperature, acidity and volcanic gas concentrations of monitored springs and fumaroles, steam and ash explosions from the summit crater or new vents, inflation or swelling of the edifice.

Probable intrusion of magma at depth, which may or may not lead to magmatic eruption. Entry within Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) must be prohibited.

PHIVOLCS raised Mt. Kanlaon to Alert Level 2 on Monday evening when the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon began at 6:51 p.m. with the volcano sending a vertical plume that rose to 5,000 meters into the atmosphere.

The eruption lasted 6 minutes and was followed by a relatively strong volcanic-tectonic earthquake.

As of Wednesday, 20,000 residents in Canlaon City have reportedly been affected by the eruption. — Jiselle Anne Casucian/BAP, GMA Integrated News
