Former Abu Sayyaf haven in Basilan declared ASG-free
After decades of being a haven of the notorious Abu Sayyaf Group, the town of Lantawan in Basilan was declared free from the Islamic extremist group on Thursday by government officials
In a statement, Western Mindanao Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (WESMINCOM-AFP) said Basilan Governor Hadjiman Hataman-Salliman made the formal pronouncement in a ceremony on Tuesday in Lantawan’s Barangay Manggas. The event was attended by provincial, military and police officials of the province.
During the ceremony, various surrendered and recovered firearms from members of the Islamic extremist organization were presented. These include a .50 caliber Barret sniper rifle, four M16A1 rifles, two M1 Garand rifles, one MAC-11 machine pistol, one shotgun, one M79 Grenade Launcher, and two .45 caliber pistols.
“This achievement is a direct result of the unwavering resolve of the people of Lantawan, who chose peace over violence,” said Brig. Gen. Alvin Luzon, commander of the Philippine Army's 101st Infantry Brigade.
“It is a powerful symbol of hope and a testament to the strength of collaboration between the military, the local government, and the community,” he added.
