What to do during an ash fall


Some communities at the slope of Kanlaon Volcano are experiencing ash fall after it erupted on Monday evening. Local government units located within the radius of the volcano have posted advisories in the even of ashfall in their area.

Here’s what you can do to keep safe before, during and after a volcanic event:

Be informed

  • Always be updated on the latest news and advisory about the volcanic eruption. Watch a television or listen to a radio on the developments of volcanic activities.
  • You can also follow the social media accounts of your local government units or local disaster management offices.
  • Follow your local government when they say to evacuate your homes.
  • Know the location of evacuation facilities in your area

Be equipped

  • Be calm and remain inside your house. Cover your nose and mouth with a dusk mask, N95 mask, or a wet towel, and eyes with goggles.
  • Prepare an emergency supply kit that contains the following:
  • First aid kit
  • Canned food
  • Flashlight
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Whistle
  • Face masks
  • Alcohol
  • Important documents
  • Blanket
  • Water and purification tablets
  • Toiletries
  • Permanent markers and pens
  • Money
  • Medications
  • You should also have a list of emergency contact numbers.


Be protected

  • Close your windows and doors. Don’t forget your pets and let them inside your homes.
  • If you are riding a vehicle, stop when the ash fall intensifies, and park your cars in a secure place.
  • Clean your fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating them.
  • Once your area is cleared from ash fall, clean your house, especially your roof and drainage.
  • Wet your towels before wiping off the ash in your windows, countertops and cars.
  • Boil your water before drinking.
