Nueva Ecija father, son nabbed for selling dog meat

Authorities on Friday arrested a father and his son in Barangay San Roque, Jaen, Nueva Ecija for allegedly selling dog meat.

In Nico Waje’s 24 Oras Weekend Sunday report, authorities posed as dog meat buyers and asked the suspects that the dog should be alive.

However, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Nueva Ecija provincial field unit and animal rights group Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) found that two dogs were already killed.

“Yung nakuha daw na dalawang patay na aso ay pinatay na daw nung may ari dahil kinain yung mga manok niya sa kanyang bakuran,” AKF Director Heidi Caguioa said.

(The two dead dogs were supposedly killed by the owner because they ate the chickens in his backyard.)

Caguioa said AKF has been receiving reports of dog killings in the area since April.

“Its not an overnight information. It takes a while at saka talagang binabantayan yan, sinisilip  po talaga natin yan,” Caguioa said.

(It’s not overnight information. It takes a while because we really observe and look into that.)

The CIDG took the two suspects into custody. They have yet to give their statements.

Two other dogs were rescued and were under the AKF's care.

Despite the recent incident, AKF said cases of dog meat trade in Central Luzon, where this kind of activity was rampant, decreased this year. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/DVM, GMA Integrated News
