Baby dies after Aghon flood sweeps away house in Quezon

An infant died in the Padre Burgos, Quezon as tropical cyclone Aghon hit parts of the province over the weekend.

According to Ian Cruz’s report on “24 Oras,” the baby reportedly died after strong floods swept away their home on Saturday night.

The latest data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) showed seven people were injured due to Aghon.

Reports of five deaths are being validated.

Based on initial information, the Quezon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said more than 1,000 people were evacuated from the province due to the impact of Aghon.

The typhoon’s impact on agriculture and infrastructure has yet to be validated.

Meanwhile, around 200 individuals en route to Polilio Island were stranded in the seaport in the municipality of Rizal, with some of the passengers staying on the pier since Friday.

A temporary bridge was also damaged in the town.

“Nung mabarahan ng lupa yung culvert sa ilalim nag-overflow po yung tubig na nanggagaling sa itaas. Kaya wsiyang sanhi ng pagkasira ng temporary bridge,” said Real MDRRMO Chief Ricky Poblete.

Fisherfolks, meanwhile, were advised to refrain from sailing in General Nakar as two boats were damaged by the huge waves.

“Ang sa amin sana hanggat may gale warning wag muna silang lalabas ng dagat. Wag muna silang lalaot dahil delikado po yan sa kanila dahil lalo na maliliit na bangka,” General Nakar MDRRMO chief Erberto Astrera said.

Damage to farms, houses

Also in Quezon, Typhoon Aghon triggered widespread floods and damaged farms and residential areas.

At least 20 people, including children, were stranded in Lucena City due to the deep floods brought about by the heavy downpour caused by the typhoon. They were safely evacuated.

Strong winds also hit the area, uprooting trees and damaging roofs, according to a “24 Oras” report of GMA Regional TV Balitang Southern Tagalog’s Paul Hernandez. Farmlands were likewise flooded.

The city was earlier placed in a state of calamity.

Batangas

In San Juan, Batangas, farmlands were also hit by floods due to the heavy rains caused by the typhoon including the four-hectare land of farmer Jaime Comia.

"Sana'y maigahan ng tubig at nang sumag-uli ang palay, kung hindi ay sasag-uli ang palay ay sira,” he told GMA Regional TV Balitang Southern Tagalog’s Denise Abante’s “24 Oras” report.

Some schools were likewise flooded, with teachers and students now starting to clean the establishments.

Baler, Aurora

Meanwhile, some tourists trooped to Baler, Aurora despite the bad weather. Tourism activities were suspended in the coastal municipality.

A no sailing, no fishing, and no swimming policy was also issued, GMA Regional TV One North Central Luzon’s Jasmin Gabriel Galban reported on "24 Oras".

The province remains under blue alert status, which alerts half of the NDRRMC’s disaster response force on standby. A gale warning is also raised over its seaboard. —Sundy Locus/NB, GMA Integrated News
