Mayon Volcano had 4 earthquakes in past 24 hours –PHIVOLCS

Four volcanic earthquakes and three rockfall events were recorded at Mayon Volcano in Albay province since Sunday midnight, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Monday.

Based on its latest bulletin, PHIVOLCS said Mayon Volcano also emitted a moderate amount of plume that reached 100 meters tall and drifted generally west.

It also had a faint crater glow that was only visible through the use of a telescope.

Last Wednesday, May 8, Mayon Volcano generated 586 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux. A short term inflation was also observed on its edifice.

Mayon Volcano is currently under Alert Level 1 due to low-level unrest.

PHIVOLCS reminded the public that entry into the six-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone of Mayon Volcano is not allowed. Flying any aircraft close to the volcano is likewise prohibited.

Hazards such as sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, rockfalls, landslides or avalanches, as well as lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall may also occur in the area. —Giselle Ombay/KBK, GMA Integrated News
