Guard drowns after saving 2 girls in Liloan, Cebu

A security guard who saved two youngsters from drowning lost his life when strong current swept him away.

The 18-year-old man identified as Jundel Escorel from Barangay Poog, Toledo City worked as a substitute security guard in a private residence by a coastal area of Barangay Catarman, Liloan town to support his studies.

An alley beside the private residence provides access to beachgoers, according to Police Major Eric Gingoyon, chief of Liloan Police Station.

While on duty last February 4, 2024, Jundel noticed the two girls out on a swim but later on were shouting for help. The girls, ages 11 and 12 years old, from Consolacion town, were accompanied by other members of their family. However, while the girls were asking for help Jundel took it upon himself to respond instead. He was able to rescue the two girls, but the strong current reportedly swept him away.

Gingoyon surmised that while Jundel demonstrated swimming skills he could have also lost most of his strength in saving the youngsters.

"Kamao gyud ni siya molangoy kay naluwas man niya tong duha pero ang problema lang base sa giingon sa witness nakakita kusog gyud kaayo ang sulog and probably naluya na sad gyud to siya kay ang instinct man gud kung ang usa ka tawo malunod kung naay motabang niya ilaha gyud ng birahon paubos para sila makasaka, isa to sa factor probably nahurot gyud iyang kusog,” Gingoyon explained.

His body was recovered below the Suba bridge in Barangay Poblacion.

Jundel's family in Toledo City already knew of the incident and appealed assistance from the security agency.

Meanwhile, Liloan Police are checking on any liability on the part of the girls’ family. —GMA Regional TV
