Parts of Mindanao still flooded

Some areas in Mindanao remain flooded after days of heavy rains.

In Barangay Bulol, Pikit, Cotabato, an elementary school got flooded, although flood waters did not reach the classrooms and offices, according to a report on Unang Balita on Tuesday, based on information gathered by GMA Regional TV One Mindanao.

The flood eventually receded and classes were not suspended.

In Carmen, Davao del Norte, motorists could already pass through portions of a national highway going toward Tagum City.

The highway and adjacent areas were still flooded as of Tuesday but the water is receding.

Meanwhile, in Barangay Marilog Proper in Davao City, 12 families lost their homes in a landslide.

The affected residents were brought to an evacuation center.

The residents already demolished their houses in the sitio to prevent further damage should another landslide occur.

According to weather bureau PAGASA, Davao Region, Caraga, and SOCCSKSARGEN will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday due to the easterlies. Flash floods or landslides may possibly result due to moderate to at times heavy rains.

Meanwhile, cases of leptospirosis have gone up in Davao Region. Davao de Oro has the most number of cases followed by Davao del Norte. These provinces were hit hard by recent flooding and landslides.

Health experts warned the public against wading through floodwaters, especially if one has an open wound. If possible, one should wear protective gears like boots, gloves, and suits.

The Department of Health in Region 11 also urged those who had to submerge in floodwaters to get anti-leptospirosis medicines from health centers. —KG, GMA Integrated News
