Malnourished children from Gainza, Camarines Sur receive help from GMA Kapuso Foundation

A family from Gainza, Camarines Sur caught the attention of GMA Kapuso Foundation while delivering food packs, toys, and hygiene kits to students in the municipality.

According to a “24 Oras” report Friday, Meriam and Moises San Jose’s family can only eat rice and P1 junk food chips whenever they don’t have enough money to buy proper food.

They even consider themselves lucky whenever they are able to afford to buy P5 worth of chips.

“‘Pag walang-wala na po, asin, toyo po," Meriam said.

Once a week, they get to afford to have meat in their meals.

Moises only earns P300 a day from planting in the field, but it is not every day that he gets the job.

"Mahirap. Tinitignan ko ‘yung mga mag-iina ko na minsan nararamdaman ko rin na nagugutom sila, gumagawa nalang po ng paraan para makakain," Moises said.

GMA Kapuso Foundation immediately took the family to Gainza’s Rural Health Unit.

“Noong kinompute natin ‘yung body mass index nila, ‘yun ‘yung estimation ng body fats sa katawan ng bata, so na-categorize silang severely wasted, ‘yung tatlo,” said Gainza Municipal Health Officer Dr. Irvin Phillip Ablay, adding that one of the children has pediatrically acquired pneumonia.

The health practitioner also said that junk food is bad for one's health.

“The more salt content ang meron sa chichirya, the higher the chance na puwedeng masira ang kidney ng bata, usually unang-una n’yan magko-cause ng UTI,” he said.

The Foundation also gave the family rice, groceries, vitamins, school supplies, hygiene kits, and clothes, while the Rural Health Unit provided medicine for the children.

“Hindi ko po ini-expect. Nakaka-iyak po talaga, sobra-sobra pong salamat sa ibinigay niyo po sa amin," Meriam said.
