9 alleged Dawlah Islamiyah members killed in Lanao del Sur clash

Nine alleged members of the Dawlah Islamiyah group died in a clash with government troops in Piagapo, Lanao del Sur on Thursday, the Philippine Army (PA) said on Saturday.

The encounter occurred in Barangay Tapurog, PA public affairs chief Colonel Louie Dema-ala said.

Of the nine fatalities, eight have been identified.

Among those who were killed was Saumay Saiden (also known as Ustadz Omar, Abu Omar, Saumay), one of four primary suspects allegedly involved in the Mindanao State University (MSU) bombing in December 2023.

Also reported killed was Abdul Hadi (also known as Hodi Imam, Abday'N) who allegedly assembled the improvised explosive device used in the said bombing incident at MSU.

Dema-ala said eight high-powered firearms were recovered.

"We call upon the community to remain vigilant and collaborate with the Army and government authorities as we collectively work towards eliminating the threat posed by local terrorist groups," Dema-ala said in a statement.

Meanwhile, four soldiers were injured during the clash.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the four soldiers who sustained injuries during the said operation. They were transported to Amai Pakpak Medical Center for urgent medical attention," Dema-ala said.

Four people were killed while 45 others were hurt after a blast occurred at the Dimaporo Gymnasium at MSU in Marawi City on Dec. 3, 2023.

Police earlier said members of the Dawlah Islamiyah were involved in the incident. —KG/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
