NDRRMC: 1,800 displaced due to Davao floods, landslides


Around 1,800 persons or 446 families have been displaced as bad weather brought by the shear line caused floods and landslides in Davao Region, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday.

In its latest report, the NDRRMC said the displaced families in Davao de Oro (1,332) and Davao Oriental (468) were staying in seven evacuation centers.

Eleven flooding and three landslide incidents were reported in Davao de Oro and Davao del Norte due to the bad weather, according to the NDRRMC.

“On 16 January 2024, at around 1:50 a.m., flooding and landslide incidents occurred in some Barangays of Mawab, Nabunturan and Maragusan, Davao de Oro,” it said.

“At around 4:00 a.m. of the same date, flooding incidents also occurred in municipalities of New Corella, Kapalong and Panabo City, Davao del Norte due to shear line,” it added.

As flood waters continue to rise, evacuation and rescue operations are still ongoing for affected families in some barangays in Tagum City and New Corella town in Davao del Norte.

In Davao de Oro, floods caused by heavy rainfall reached the rooftops of several houses. In Compostela town, two babies, a minor, and two bed-ridden persons were among the individuals who were rescued.

The shear line has affected 2,212 individuals or 552 families in 14 barangays in Davao de Oro, Davao Occidental, and Davao Oriental, according to the NDRRMC.

At least five roads and one bridge became impassable.

Classes were suspended in 27 areas in Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, and Davao City.

Meanwhile, work was also suspended in 14 areas in Davao de Oro, Davao Oriental, and Davao del Norte. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA Integrated News
