Rescue ops launched as Davao floods reach rooftop level in some communities

Rescue operations have been launched as floods hit some areas in Davao Region, according to authorities on Monday.

In Davao de Oro, floods caused by heavy rainfall reached the rooftops of several houses in Purok 9, Barangay Poblacion amid the heavy rains, according to GMA Regional TV News.

Around 150 families were evacuated from Purok 5, 6, 7, and 8 in Barangay Magading in Nabunturan town, as reported by the Army’s 11th Regional Community Group, Reserve Command.

In Compostela, two babies, a minor, and two bed-ridden persons were among the individuals who were rescued from the floods, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Region XI said.

Meanwhile in Davao Oriental, at least 240 individuals or 68 families were evacuated from their homes, according to the provincial government.

Due to the heavy rains, classes in public and private schools were cancelled in Davao City, and some areas in Davao de Oro, Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Davao Occidental, and Davao del Sur.

Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte said work from home arrangements shall be adopted in all government offices in the city.

Davao de Oro Governor Dorothy Montejo-Gonzaga also ordered a province-wide suspension of work in government offices, except those providing essential services in response to disaster situations, starting January 16 until further notice.—Joviland Rita/RF, GMA Integrated News
