200 Surigao del Sur families evacuate due to Kabayan

Around 200 families in Surigao del Sur's Lianga town took shelter at an evacuation center due to Tropical Storm Kabayan.

According to GMA Regional TV One Mindanao Kent Abrigana's report on 24 Oras, several homes were flooded, and farms were damaged in Lianga due to heavy downpours from Kabayan.

The locality experienced strong winds and rough coastal conditions during the morning, prompting the evacuation of residents who are still recovering from the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Hinatuan on December 4.

Nevertheless, several locals chose not to evacuate, including fishermen who stayed to make sure their boats were not damaged in the storm.

The Bureau of Fire Protection meanwhile, rescued several senior citizens in Sitio Libtong from a knee-deep flood.

While work and classes were canceled in Surigao del Sur on Monday, the weather had improved by evening. Nevertheless, weather service PAGASA still warned of possible landslides and flashfloods.

In Davao City, conditions were overcast accompanied by some light rain.

Despite the milder conditions, Samal Island boat trips were canceled.
