PWD killed after being hit by PNR train in Naga City

A person with disability (PWD) died after he was hit by a Philippine National Railway (PNR) train in Naga City.

According to Cris Novelo of GMA Regional TV Balitang Bicolandia on “24 Oras,” the incident occurred around 5 a.m. on Tuesday in Barangay Concepcion Pequeña.

The train was traveling to Ligao City,  Albay from PNR- Naga City station when the accident occurred.

“Upon sa pag-iimbestiga kagabi, hanggang ngayon, so na-discover natin na ‘yung tao, medyo may kapansanan,” said Police Major Juvy Llunar, Station Commander, Naga City Police Office Station 2.

(Based on our investigation, we found out the victim had physical disabilities.)

As seen in CCTV footage, the man continued to walk along the train tracks even as vehicles stopped to allow the train to pass.

Moments later the victim was hit by the Albay-bound train. He died on the spot.

According to the man’s wife, the victim was hard of hearing.

“Kaya pala nagtataka ako, bakit hindi pa siya dumarating,” said his wife, Salve Aquino.

(I was wondering why he has not arrived.)

Based on PNR records, this is the third accident with a fatality involving a train ever since operations resumed last July.

“Kami ay lubhang nababahala at nag-aalala siyempre lalung-lalo na sa kapakanan nung mga nasa paligid na mga nakatira diyan sa along our PNR tracks, diyan sa hanggang Ligao,” said Joseline Geronimo, Manager, PNR Operations Department.

(We are very concerned and worried, especially for the welfare of the people who live along our PNR tracks, from here up to Ligao.)

The PNR said it plans to add security personnel to prevent accidents.

“Mag-ingat po sila sa kanilang pag-tawid,. Bago sila tatawid, pakinggan nila, meron bang paparating na tren. Lilingon muna sa kanan (at kaliwa) bumubusina naman po ‘yan,” she cautioned the public.

(People should be careful when crossing. Before they cross, they should listen if there is an incoming train coming. Please look at both sides.  The trains also blow their horns [at crossings].) —RF, GMA Integrated News
