P100,000 reward up for DJ Johnny Walker's killers
A P100,000 reward is being offered to any information that will lead to the arrest of the suspects behind the killing of a radio anchor in Calamba, Misamis Occidental.
According to Jun Veneracion's report on "24 Oras," Juan Jumalon or better known as “DJ Johnny Walker” was at his home-based radio station in Barangay Don Bernardo A. Neri over the weekend when he was shot at close range.
Initial information from the Philippine National Police (PNP) showed that the shooting incident occurred at 5:35 a.m. while Jumalon was in the middle of his radio program on 94.7 Calamba Gold FM.
The suspect went to Jumalon’s residence pretending to request that an announcement be aired on the said radio station.
It took just seconds for the gunman to enter the gate and then the residence to shoot Jumalon.
The radio anchor was rushed to the Calamba District Hospital by his family but was pronounced dead on arrival by the duty physician.
The PNP earlier released a computerized sketch of one of the suspects and said it had obtained a copy of CCTV footage and testimonies of witnesses related to the fatal shooting.
A special task group will also be created for the investigation.
Jerrebel Jumalon, the victim’s wife, said the gunman was not alone. She said there were three suspects in the tragic incident, two of which entered their house while the other accomplice remained outside in his motorcycle.
“Narinig ko na lang yung gulo sa labas then putok, dalawang putok. After that yung gunman lumabas din sa gate kaya hinabol ko yun nakita ko ang gunman, dalawa, sumakay sa motor na may driver na nag wait sa kanila,” said Jerrebel.
(I heard gunshots outside. I went out and saw the two gunmen trying to flee on a motorcycle. A driver was waiting for them.)
“Sumigaw ako ng 'pulis, tabang, help'. Tumingin sila sa akin at mukhang kinabahan sila at ‘yung driver. Natumba sila tatlo,” she added.
(I screamed for help. They looked at me and I think they got scared. They fell down.)
Police declined to give a timetable of the investigation but said they are looking into all possible angles of the shooting including land dispute, and business rivalry.
“Lahat ng anggulo ay ating sisiyasatin base na rin sa mga ebidensya na ating nakalap sa crime scene at testimonya ng mga testigo,” said PNP PRO-10 Police Major Joann Navarro.
(We’re investigating all angles based the evidence and testimonies we obtained.)
Jerrebel, for her part, believes her husband’s death is not related to his work.
“Kasi it is only entertainment, ang kanyang mga programs sa radio. Hindi siya commentator, plain broadcaster lang. Magbasa lang siya ng greetings, mga public service,” she added.
(His programs were all for entertainment. He’s not a commentator but a plain broadcaster. He just reads greetings and public service announcements.)
The victim’s remains were returned home and were buried at his residence.
The Department of Justice said the National Bureau of Investigation was already investigating the shooting incident.
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has condemned the killing and ordered the Philippine National Police to investigate the crime and apprehend the perpetrator. —NB, GMA Integrated News
