Cavite imposes six-hour curfew, liquor ban ahead of BSKE

The Provincial government of Cavite imposed a six-hour curfew and a liquor ban to ensure peace and order ahead of the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).

According to Dano Tingcungco's report on "24 Oras," the curfew and liquor ban starts from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

There will be no age exemption. Residents are not allowed to leave their houses and gather in public places during the said hours from October 19 to October 30.

However, based on the ordinance of the Provincial Council, election officials and personnel, and those who enforce the law, such as the police, are exempted from the curfew.

Also exempted were those who were on their way to work, those experiencing an emergency, and those involved in essential activities with parental or a guardian's permission.

"Generally, elections barangay magkakapitbahay at pamilya di maiiwasan na magkapersonalan. It’s given, we just want to be preventive about it," said Provincial Government of Cavite Public Information Officer Denesse Cajulis.

Meanwhile, most residents in the province were in favor of the curfew.

"Okay lang para safe siyempre pag eleksyon di mo alam kung kailan magbabanggaan mga kandidato," said resident Antonette de Guzman.

However, some businesses with extended operating hours at night are affected.

"Wala pa talagang reports that we know of the response of the public. They are very responsive. They do understand that it is coming with good intentions to keep elections safe for everybody," Cajulis said.

The penalty for the first curfew violation is a P2,000 fine, while third-time offenders may pay P5,000 or serve a six-month prison sentence. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
