Edward Hagedorn, Palawan representative, passes away

Palawan Representative Edward Hagedorn has passed away, Isa Avendaño-Umali reported on Dobol B TV on Tuesday, citing Hagedorn's staff member Jennica Lim.

Hagedorn, who was supposed to celebrate his 77th birthday on October 12, died early Tuesday morning in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, where he also served as mayor.

Details about the wake and funeral will be announced by the family, the report said.

A statement posted on Hagedorn’s official Facebook said, “With heavy hearts, we inform you of the passing of a beloved friend, brother, husband, father, and public servant, Edward Solon Hagedorn. Our dear Congressman died peacefully on October 3rd, 2023, after 76 years of shining his light into the world.”

The statement lauded Hagedorn as a “champion for the environment, tourism, agriculture, and peace and order.”

“His efforts created inclusive spaces for the community and inspired a collective desire for change. It's hard not to be infected by his energy and laughter, which he freely shares with everyone he encounters,” it added.

The statement also described Hagedorn as someone who has the ability to lead with authority and with a warm and welcoming approach at the same time.

“His charisma shines through in every interaction, leaving a lasting impact on those he touches. On behalf of Cong. Ed, his family, staff and closest kin,” it said.

In 2022, Hagedorn filed a bill seeking to declare the three nautical miles off Kalayaan Island group and Scarborough Shoal as a marine protected area (MPA) to prevent poaching and reclamation activities, among others.

Hagedorn’s bill defines MPA as identified portions of water set aside because of their unique physical and biological significance, managed to enhance biological diversity, and protected against destructive human exploitation.

Speaker Martin Romualdez mourned the passing of Hagedorn.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our cherished colleague, Rep. Edward Solon Hagedorn. His passion for the environment, tourism, agriculture, and peace was not just a professional pursuit, but a reflection of his soul. His genuine warmth and ability to touch lives went beyond titles and protocols,'' Romualdez said.

“As we remember him, let us not only grieve but also celebrate the inspiration he provided. His legacy calls us to continue his work with the same passion and love he demonstrated every day. I ask the nation to join me in extending our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones,” Romualdez said.

Romualdez added that Hagedorn’s family and friends can take solace in the legacy he left behind.

“To have known and worked with Congressman Ed has been an honor and a privilege. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire us all,” Romualdez said. —with Llanesca T. Panti/KBK/VBL, GMA Integrated News
