PHIVOLCS: 99 aftershocks recorded after magnitude 6.3 Cagayan earthquake


A total of 99 aftershocks have been recorded after Tuesday night's magnitude 6.3 earthquake off the coast of Dalupiri Island in Calayan, Cagayan, PHIVOLCS said Wednesday.

In an update as of 8 a.m., PHIVOLCS said the magnitudes of the recorded aftershocks ranged from 1.8 to 3.7, while their depths ranged from eight to 29 kilometers.

The tectonic earthquake, which was downgraded from magnitude 6.4, happened at 7:03 p.m. with a depth of focus of 41 kilometers.

Due to the earthquake, the following intensities were reported in different areas:

Intensity V

  • Bacarra, Bangui, Burgos, City of Laoag, Pagudpud, Paoay, Pasuquin, and San Nicolas in Ilocos Norte.

Intensity IV

  • Luna in Apayao
  • Batac City, Currimao, and Pinili in Ilocos Norte
  • Claveria, Enrile, Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira, and Santa Praxedes in Cagayan

Intensity III

  • Bucay, Lacub, Lagayan, and San Juan in Abra
  • Banayoyo, Bantay, Burgos, Caoayan, San Emilio, San Esteban, San Ildefonso, San Vicente, Santa Catalina, Santa Cruz, Santiago, Sigay, and Vigan City in Ilocos Sur
  • Solana in Cagayan
  • Santo Domingo in Nueva Ecija

Intensity II

  • Dolores, La Paz, Luba, Pidigan, and Tubo in Abra
  • Narvacan, Santa, and Santa Maria in Ilocos Sur
  • Aparri in Cagayan

Intensity I

  • San Isidro in Abra
  • Candon City and Tagudin in Ilocos Sur
  • Camalaniugan, Lal-Lo, and Santa Ana in Cagayan

According to the PHIVOLCS, damage and aftershocks are expected after the earthquake.

Five people were reported injured due to a collapsed wall in Calayan, Cagayan, the Office Civil Defense (OCD) said on Wednesday.

The OCD said two of the injured persons sustained brain trauma and head concussion, while the remaining three suffered minor injuries.
