Cop, suspected accomplice nabbed for shooting of 15-year-old in Rodriguez, Rizal

15-year-old John Ombad shot in Rodrigez, Rizal

Police arrested an off-duty cop and his alleged accomplice in connection with the shooting of a 15-year-old in Rodriguez, Rizal.

Police Corporal Arnulfo Sabillo and his alleged accomplice Jeffrey Baguio were arrested by the Philippine National Police for the tragic homicide case, the PNP said on Saturday.

Personnel of the Community Police Assistance Center (COMPAC) #5 of the Rodriguez Municipal Police Station (MPS) were also administratively relieved of their posts as investigations started, the PNP added.

Initial investigation revealed that a man identified as John Ace Ompad was riding a motorcycle and was heading home in Barangay San Isidro when the suspects flagged him down on Sunday, August 20.

However, a motorcycle chase ensued and in the end, John Ace took off his helmet and threw it at the suspects.

Sabillo allegedly drew his firearm and shot four times in John Ace’s direction. However, the latter's brother John Francis Ompad, 15, who emerged from their house, was hit instead.

John Francis was hit in the abdomen and was rushed to the hospital. However, he was declared medically dead while undergoing treatment at East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City.

Police confiscated Sabillo's service firearm, a Taurus handgun, as well as a magazine loaded with live ammunition.

PNP chief Police General Benjamin Acorda Jr. assured that justice will be served.

"We are committed to ensuring that the bereaved family finds justice for their deceased loved one," Acorda said.

“Such actions are deeply regrettable and do not represent the values of the Philippine National Police. We will ensure a thorough and impartial investigation, and appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible," he added.

The suspects are facing charges of homicide and attempted homicide which were filed before the Office of Rizal Provincial Prosecutor in Taytay, Rizal on Tuesday, August 22. —KG, GMA Integrated News
