Save the Children, EU complete BARMM educational assistance project

In a project led by Save the Children Philippines in partnership with the European Union Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), over 18,000 children received education and child protection support in several areas in Mindanao.

Project SINDAO, a two-year funded project designed to aid vulnerable children subject to conflicts, displacements, and gender-based violence in Maguindanao Province, Lanao Del Sur, and Surigao Del Sur, yielded positive results.

Through the project, displaced children had the opportunity to seek improvement for their literacy, reading, and numeracy skills through “after-school” classes designed in an interactive structure.

According to data released by Save the Children Philippines, more than 93% of participating students suffering from interrupted learning were able to improve their skills.

A project result of a 96% retention rate was also recorded in participating preschool to Grade 3 students who were at risk of dropping out.

Meanwhile, students in non-formal education such as Torils and Madrasah schools also reported positive results from the project.

Along with educational programs, the project was also able to provide students with gender-sensitive hygiene facilities, school furniture, and semi-permanent learning spaces. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
