Box jellyfish sting kills woman in Bantayan Island, Cebu
A female visitor died after being stung by a box jellyfish at a beach in Sta. Fe, Bantayan Island in Cebu, according to a report by Nikko Sereno of GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak on "24 Oras."
Responding authorities tried to revive Leslie Ann Madronero, 31, of Valencia in Bohol but failed.
Sta. Fe Mayor Ithamar Espinosa confirmed the incident in her social media page.
The local government said it will give financial assistance to the family of the woman.
It also advised visitors to take extra precaution at the beach for the presence of jellyfish.
Allan Poquita, regional director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Region 7 said jellyfish are common in the summer season.
“Kung summertime, mataas talaga ang temperature, lumalabas talaga sila. Hindi naman ‘yon ang makapag trigger ng sakit sa mga dadaanan, halimbawa, high blood ang isang tao, ‘yong ang puwedeng makapag trigger," Poquita said.
The official said jellyfish may be removed by applying oil to the affected skin.
"Puwedeng baby oil, used oil or cooking oil? Oo puwede kahit coconut oil or sunblock kasi oily na yon," he said.—LDF, GMA Integrated News
