Classes in 18 schools suspended due to Mayon Volcano’s unrest —DepEd

Eighteen schools in the Bicol region have suspended classes so far due to Mayon Volcano’s intensified unrest, the Department of Education (DepEd) said Tuesday.

Based on DepEd’s situation report as of June 12, some schools located in the municipalities of Camalig, Daraga, Guinobatan, and Malilipot and the cities of Ligao and Tabaco in Albay suspended classes amid Mayon Volcano’s magmatic unrest.

A total of 14 schools, meanwhile, are being used as evacuation centers.

Two schools are situated within the six-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone of Mayon Volcano, while 45 schools are within its seven-to eight-kilometer radius.

On Monday, the provincial government of Albay extended the danger zone around Mayon Volcano to seven kilometers due to its continued unrest.

Mayon Volcano, which is currently under Alert Level 3, recently recorded one volcanic earthquake, one Pyroclastic Density Current event, and 221 rockfall events, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Tuesday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said more than 14,000 residents have already been evacuated amid the continued unrest of Mayon Volcano. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
