PHIVOLCS: Mayon Volcano lava flow reaches 800-1,000 meters downslope

The lava flow from Mayon Volcano’s summit crater has reached an approximate distance of 800-1000 meters downslope of the Miisi and Bonga Gullies, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported late Monday evening.

The photos, according to PHIVOLCS, are taken from the Mayon Volcano Observatory at 10: 56 p.m. on Monday the 12th of June 2023 and at 12:03 a.m. on June 13, 2023, Tuesday.

Mayon Volcano in Albay is under Alert Level 3 due to its “intensified unrest” or magmatic unrest. It had had a lava flow activity on Sunday night, emplacing at least 500 meters from the summit crater along the Bonga and Miisi Gullies.

PHIVOLCS said Monday it also recorded 21 volcanic earthquakes, 260 rockfall events, and three pyroclastic density current events in Mayon Volcano in the past 24 hours.

On Monday, Albay Governor Edcel Greco Lagman issued an advisory extending the danger zone around Mayon Volcano to seven kilometers due to its "increasing unrest."

The Albay government said that "all populations inside the seven-kilometer extended danger zone is placed under preparedness status."

This meant that an "evacuation will be executed anytime" and evacuees "should bring with them necessities in the evacuation center."

This measure was taken to ensure zero casualties and for the interest of public safety.
