Remains of alleged hazing victim John Matthew Salilig arrive home in Zamboanga

The remains of Adamson University student John Matthew Salilig, who allegedly died due to hazing, arrived in his hometown in Zamboanga City on Thursday.

A report of GMA Regional TV One Mindanao's Efren Mamac on GTV's Balitanghali said the relatives and acquaintances of John Matthew came to his wake. He is scheduled to be buried on Saturday.

According to his father, Jeoffrey Salilig, they will take advantage of the remaining days to be with John.

He said the family would continue to seek justice, which they consider a fight for all hazing victims.

Moreover, he said he is thankful for the support of local and national officials and various agencies.

John Matthew is a third year chemical engineering student found buried last February 28 in a shallow grave in Imus, Cavite, more than a week after he was last seen alive.

Based on the autopsy, the cause of death was “severe blunt force in the lower extremities.”

Police investigation showed that Salilig went through the welcoming rites of a Tau Gamma Phi chapter on the afternoon of February 19.

Six persons of interest in the death of Salilig underwent inquest proceedings Thursday morning. They were positively identified by a fraternity neophyte who was with Salilig during the initiation rites.

On Wednesday, Adamson University came out with a statement condemning what happened. Students and teachers, meanwhile, held a candlelight vigil for Salilig. —Sherylin Untalan/AOL, GMA Integrated News
