Cebu's Garcia announces contingent withdrawals over Sinulog venue disagreement

Due to a disagreement between Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama over the event's venue, Garcia announced a decision to pull out at least eight contingents from the Sinulog Showdown, GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak's Nikko Sereno reported Friday on “24 Oras.”

Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City will also not attend the Sinulog grand parade if Rama insists on holding the grand ritual showdown at the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu City.

Garcia said she was concerned over the muddy conditions at the venue.

“My heart went out especially to our children. They did not deserve this. If, and that is perhaps the prerogative of the city of Cebu, they insist on holding the Sinulog showdown at the SRP then all of the eight competing contingents together with one guest contingent where I will be dancing will be pulling out of the Sinulog showdown this Sunday. And that is final,” Garcia said.

The province was open to joining the Sinulog if it was held at the Cebu City complex.

However, Rama still wants to hold the event at the SRP, saying the venue was being prepared for use in huge celebrations.

According to the report, it had been raining in Cebu for several days, disrupting the preparations at the venue.

“Senior Sto. Niño will talk to her,” Rama said. — Richa Noriega/DVM, GMA Integrated News
