Zamboanga City placed under state of calamity due to Paeng

Zamboanga City was placed under a state of calamity due to the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng.

In a statement, the Zamboanga City LGU said this was approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod during a special session on Saturday afternoon.

“The declaration will enable the city government and the affected barangays to utilize resources and address [the damage] caused by the tropical storm,” the city government said.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, chaired by Mayor John Dalipe, earlier recommended placing Zamboanga City under a state of calamity because of the devastation brought by Paeng.

The local government, citing the Emergency Operations Center, said one person died, while four others are still missing following a series of flash floods from Thursday to Friday.

More than 5,000 families were evacuated in at least 42 barangays affected by the floods and heavy rains. — VBL, GMA News
