3 students injured in science experiment accident in Monkayo, Davao de Oro

Three Grade 7 students were injured in an accident during a science experiment in a school in Monkayo, Davao de Oro, police said Friday.

In a statement, the Monkayo Police said the accident happened at Awao National High School before noon Thursday .

The students were conducting an experiment on separating components of salt-water solution through evaporation at the Science Laboratory located at the second floor of the school.

According to the police, the teacher was using an alcohol stove, cotton, ethyl alcohol, wire gauge, and baker cup for the experiment.

“While on the process of experimentation, the students gathered around the table. The teacher refilled the stove with ethyl alcohol which caused (fire),” the police said.

The injured students were brought to Davao De Oro Provincial Hospital-Montevista for medical attention.

Two of the students have been discharged from the hospital while the other one was referred to Southern Philippine Medical Center in Davao City for further medical attention, the police said.

Department of Education (DepEd) spokesperson Michael Poa said they are checking the reports on the accident.

“I do not have the complete picture, information about that right now pero pinapa-check na po natin 'yan sa field offices kung ano po 'yung nangyari sa science experiment po na 'yan,” he said.
