Nueva Ecija declares state of calamity in wake of Typhoon Karding

The province of Nueva Ecija on Monday declared a state of calamity due to the devastation Typhoon Karding.

In Resolution No. 82-S-2022, the Office of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan said the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMc) recommended raising the state of calamity in consideration of the “huge damage and destruction” sustained by the province brought about by the strong typhoon.

Heavy flooding hit Nueva Ecija and other provinces after Karding hit Luzon over the weekend. Power supply in the area was also cut while at least two roads were made impassable.

“In consideration of the huge damage and destruction sustained by the entire province, the PDRRMC, headed by Governor Aurelio Umali, recommended the declaration of a state of calamity in the whole province of Nueva Ecija in order that the Calamity Fund of the provincial government and the respective local government units in the province to be utilized to expedite the help and assistance that will be provided to their constituents,” the resolution read.

“The Sangguniang Panlalawigan, after evaluating the report and recommendation given by the PDRRMC, finds the declaration of the state of calamity necessary and with extreme urgency,” it added.

For his part, Umali said the provincial government would prioritize helping those who are in the agriculture sector.

“Prayoridad ng Pamahalaang Panlalawigan ang mga nasalanta sa sektor ng agrikultura, mga nawasak na tahanan, at ang agarang pagbabalik ng supply ng kuryente,” said Umali in a Facebook post. “Patuloy po tayong magdasal para sa mabilis na pagbangon ng Nueva Ecija”.
