Magalong suspends work, classes in Baguio after magnitude 7 quake

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong ordered Wednesday the suspension of work and classes in the private and public sectors following the magnitude 7 earthquake that hit Abra and felt in the city.

Magalong said they have yet to receive any reports of injuries aside from a student who panicked and “jumped” at Saint Louis University.

“As of today, as of this time, wala tayong serious damage, no injuries, no serious injuries reported except for one particular student na nag panic doon sa Saint Louis University na tumalon,” Magalong said.

“Hindi namin alam kung ano ‘yung extent ng kanyang injury but she was already rushed to the hospital. So we’re not getting in touch with the hospital,” he added.

He said they are also coordinating with barangay officials for reports of untoward incidents.

“We’re now also getting in touch with the barangay officials para mag report agad sila ng mga untoward incidents or any critical incidents na nangyari sa kanila. So far wala pa naman tayong natatanggap ngayon,” Magalong said.

“So far, wala naman tayong damage pa. We have several constituents at residents na nahilo at, you know, first aid is already being administered to them,” he later added.

He further said that there is enough food supply in the city and there is no need to panic as the situation is under control.

Magalong urged building owners to immediately convene their safety teams and check for structural damages and to immediately report any damage to the LGU.

“We are appealing to all the building owners na 'wag muna nila papasukin ‘yung kanilang mga occupants sa mga buildings until such time that we are deemed safe by the structural engineers o kaya nung kanilang mga safety officers,” he said.

He said the incidents can be reported to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, 911, or the Baguio City Police Office.

Magalong urged residents to wait for further announcements. He also assured that the government is on top of the situation.
