AFP: 2 alleged NPA members killed in Quezon clash

Two alleged members of the New People's Army (NPA) were killed in an encounter with government troops in Quezon province on Monday, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

In a statement, the AFP said the fatalities, whose names were not disclosed, were suspected members of the NPA’s Platoon 1, Kilusang Larangang Gerilya Narciso.

The military said the firefight occurred as the Philippine Army's 24th Division Reconnaissance Company under the 2nd Infantry conducted security operations at Sitio Angelo in Barangay Umiray, General Nakar town on Monday afternoon.

The enemies were not able to hold their ground, which prompted them to withdraw, leaving behind their dead comrades, the AFP said.

Seized from the scene were an M16 rifle, an M14 rifle, and one M203 grenade launcher.

The AFP said it has increased its security operations against terrorist groups ahead of the May 9 elections. —Giselle Ombay/VBL, GMA News
