Community clean-up starts as cash for work begins in Siargao
After Typhoon Odette battered Surigao del Norte's Siargao Island, a government livelihood program that allows residents to earn money by helping clean up the island for 10 days was put into effect.
In Nico Waje's Monday "24 Oras" report, residents of General Luna town were among the beneficiaries of the Department of Labor and Employment's Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Worker cash-for-work program.
Under the program, locals are tasked to clean up the typhoon debris in their area for four hours in ten days. Each worker would be paid P320 per day.
In total, they can earn P3,200 which would help in disaster recovery, especially those whose homes were swept away by the typhoon.
However, it was uncertain whether the salary would be given immediately.
"Every 2 to 3 weeks po kasi processing po iyon sa region. So after pong processing, pupunta po 'yung DOLE dito sa General Luna or depende po. Mayroon din po sa M Lhuillier," said General Luna local government peso manager Ana Rose Minguita, referring to the cash pickup service.
(The processing is every two to three weeks in the region. So after the processing, DOLE will come here to General Luna or it could also be sent via M Lhuillier.)
Earlier, over 5,000 families on the island who were affected by Odette had received cash aid. — Consuelo Marquez/DVM, GMA News
