Odette leaves damage to tourist spots, crops in Visayas


Typhoon Odette has caused damage to popular tourist spots and billions-worth of crops in Visayas, according to reports on GMA News’ Unang Balita on Tuesday.

In Carmen, Bohol, four of the Chocolate Hills had soil erosion, according to a report of Ian Cruz.

After the onslaught of the typhoon, only two of the 115 tarsiers in Bohol tarsier conservation area were sighted. According to the keeper, tarsiers usually hide in rocks and branches during bad weather.

Many trees in a man-made forest in Loboc-Pilar area fell down. Many people are still visiting the area, which is 246 meter above sea level, to access better reception of mobile signal.

A total of 94 people were reported dead while 18 were missing in Bohol.

In Pilar Municipal Hall, some facilities and documents were also damaged by the typhoon.

Many residents are calling for assistance and complaining about the high price of gasoline in their area.

Bohol Governor Arthur Yap said he is following up on the 35,000 food packs that  Department of Social Welfare and Development promised to send.

In Negros Occidental, the provincial government has declared a state of calamity due to effect of Odette, according to a report of Adrian Prietos.

 

The provincial agriculture office reported a P4.4 billion damage in crops affecting 23,000 farmers.

Schools, seaports, and other infrastructures also obtained damage. Around 7,000 infrastructures were totally damaged while 33,000 were partially damaged. A total 181,000 residents lost their homes.

A total of P5.89 billion worth of damage was reported in Negros Occidental, according to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

The PDRRMO reported 33 deaths, but only 22 were recorded by the Philippine National Police so far.

In Negros Oriental, 58 were reported dead. Most of them died due to drowning in the flood or getting hit by fallen trees.

Meanwhile in Lapu-Lapu City, Mayor Junard Chan said a billion worth of damage was reported in the area.—Joviland Rita/AOL, GMA News
