Comelec decries slay of acting poll officer in Northern Samar


The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Friday condemned the killing of an acting election officer in Catarman, Northern Samar.

In a statement, poll body spokesperson James Jimenez said, “The commission condemns the craven killing of acting Election Officer James Diaz Maghanoy.”

“The entire Commission calls on authorities to leave no stone unturned in its probe of the murder of Maghanoy, and to ensure that those responsible are brought swiftly to justice,” Jimenez added.

A police report indicates that Maghanoy, a municipal election officer from Lope de Vega, Samar, was on is way home when he was shot at by an unidentified assailant on the national highway in Barangay Samoge, Catarman at about 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Maghanoy sustained two gunshot wounds, one in his head and another in the body.

He was brought to Northern Samar Provincial Hospital, but was pronounced dead while being treated.

The Catarman municipal police office is already conducting a follow-up investigation for the arrest of the assailant. —LBG, GMA News
