2,780 families affected by Typhoon Kiko —NDRRMC

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Sunday said 2,780 families or 11,145 individuals were affected so far by Typhoon Kiko (international name: Chanthu).

In its latest situational report, the NDRRMC said the affected individuals are in 97 barangays in Regions I, II, III and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

A total of 1,563 individuals are staying inside evacuation centers, while 2,094 displaced individuals are staying outside evacuation centers.

Four rain-induced landslides were reported in Region I, particularly in Aringay, Burgos and San Fernando in La Union.

Meanwhile, 19 areas were reported flooded in the towns of Macabebe, San Simon, and Candaba, Pampanga in Region III.

Six roads were rendered not passable — three in Region II, two in Region III, and one in CAR.

Power went out in five cities/municipalities in Batanes and Apayao and has yet to be restored.

Sabtang, Batanes meanwhile had its water supply interrupted after its pipelines and accessories were damaged by the typhoon’s strong winds and heavy rains.

A total of six areas in Batanes in Region II are experiencing communication outage and issues.

As for those stranded, the NDRRMC said there were 93 passengers stranded in Regions I, II, III, Calabarzon, XII, and CAR.

One house was partially damaged in CAR.

Meanwhile, a total of 160 packages were extended as assistance to affected families in Region I.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 remained hoisted over Itbayat in the northern part of Batanes on Sunday morning as Kiko brings heavy to intense and at times torrential rains over the province, PAGASA said in its early morning bulletin.

TCWS No. 1 meanwhile was raised over the northern portion of Babuyan Islands (Babuyan Island, Calayan Island, Panuitan Island) and the rest of Batanes.

At 4 a.m. Sunday, Kiko's eye was located at 245 km north of Itbayat, Batanes or over the sea east of central Taiwan.

The typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 215 km/h, and central pressure of 940 hPa.

Kiko slightly weakened and was moving northward at 15 km/h.

From its eye, strong winds or higher than that category extend outward up to 480 km.

Kiko is expected to head generally northward over the sea east of Taiwan and the East China Sea.

The typhoon is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Sunday afternoon or evening. —KG, GMA News
