Monsoon flooding worsened by the high tide engulfs Macabebe

Flooding in Pampanga's Macabebe town caused by the southwest monsoon was made worse by the high tide from the nearby river.

According to Mariz Umali's Friday 24 Oras report, much of Macabebe was flooded with some areas submerged under three feet of water.

Public transport was affected by floods, compelling locals to wade through knee-high waters to get to their jobs.

Among them was Kolehiyo De San Lorenzo De Pampanga teacher Christine Cruz, who was worried over the health dangers from the flooding

"Siyempre po nakakatakot kasi 'di mo alam kung gaano kadumi yung tubig na dinadaan po namin," said Cruz.

"Halimbawa, kung may sugat ka. Siyempre po open wound po yun. Napakadelikado po. Iniiwasan mo nga magka-COVID, iniiwasan mo pa magkasakit dito."

Businesses were also affected, though food service worker Maricris Ymzon pointed out that the flooding was seasonal and not unexpected.

Meanwhile, the Macabebe local government was doing its best to repair roads and prevent even more flooding.

Across Pampanga, 36 barangays were flooded, with 5,000 families or 26,000 individuals affected.

In Macabebe alone, damage to local fish ponds was estimated at P8 million. — DVM, GMA news
