Former WBC champion Eden Sonsona arrested after drug buy-bust
Former World Boxing Council champion Eden Sonsona was arrested by authorities in General Santos City after a drug buy-bust operation was conducted.
Sonsona allegedly was involved in selling illegal drugs, according to a report by Mai Bermudez on GMA News' Unang Balita on Monday.
Police said they have been conducting surveillance on the boxer for quite some time.
Other boxers reportedly advised Sonsona to stop selling illegal drugs since all his earnings from boxing go to this activity.
Due to health protocols in detention, the boxer was not able to give a statement regarding his arrest.
Sonsona's last fight was on March 17, 2021 in General Santos City but he lost to his opponent Rimar Metuda of Cagayan de Oro City.
In May 2015, he bagged the WBC international super featherweight title after a technical knockout victory over Mexican prospect Adrian Estrella in Mexico.
In 2010, he was the undercard in the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey fight in Arlington, Texas, and knocked out Colombian Mauricio Pastrana. —KG, GMA News
