BFAR: 7 areas found positive for shellfish poison


The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Friday evening announced that seven areas are positive for paralytic shellfish poison that is beyond the regulatory limit.

In its latest shellfish bulletin, BFAR said that all types of shellfish and acetes or alamang from the following areas are not safe for human consumption:

  •    Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur
  •    Coastal waters of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur
  •    Balite Bay, Mati City in Davao Oriental
  •    Tambobo Bay, Siaton in Negros Oriental
  •    Puerto Princesa Bay, Puerto Princesa City in Palawan
  •    Coastal waters of Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol
  •    Coastal waters of Calubian in Leyte

According to BFAR, fish, squid, shrimps, and crabs are from these areas are safe for human consumption as long as they are fresh and washed thoroughly while their internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking. — DVM, GMA News
