Stormy weather destroys several hectares of rice fields in S. Cotabato

Hectares upon hectares of rice farms nearly due for harvest in Koronadal City in South Cotabato have been destroyed by strong winds and heavy rains, especially in Barangay San Isidro, with farmers fearing they could hardly salvage the little that was left.

"Unang Balita" reported Wednesday that a huge swathe of destruction could be seen from an aerial video showing rice plants pressed on the ground, and some soaked in floodwater.

Also, parts of Koronadal City were flooded from heavy rains, with floodwaters swamping up several houses in residential areas.

Local authorities advised residents to brace themselves against flash floods as inclement weather continued.

In Kidapawan, Cotabato, strong winds and rains pummeled the city, knocking down trees and bringing flash floods in low-lying areas.

Elsewhere, in Malalag town in Davao del Sur, the national highway was flooded, affecting several motorists. Rescue teams were guarding the flooded road guiding vehicles to wade away from potholed sections.

Floods were also reported in Tantangan, South Coatabato.

In North Cotabato, meanwhile, Makilala town also experienced heavy rains and strong winds that sent trees and branches crashing down on some road sections. Clearing operations continued. —LBG, GMA News
