Tagaytay tourists scramble to flee Taal Volcano unrest
The usually busy streets of Tagaytay City fell dark and silent following the phreatic eruption of the Taal Volcano on Sunday, forcing several tourists to rush out of the city and return to Manila.
The Santa Rosa-Tagaytay Road was filled with families seeking to exit the popular tourist destination.
Leo Carasco said he and his family had to cut their trip short due to the eruption. It took them six hours to travel from Tagaytay to the neighboring municipality of Silang.
“Sa Tuesday pa sana ‘yung balik namin sa Maynila e. Napaaga kasi medyo delikado rin tapos laging naglilindol,” he said in a report by Jonathan Andal on 24 Oras.
“Okay lang, at least safe. Kasi may mga aksidente na rin diyan, maraming nagkabanggaan na rin kaming nadaanan kanina, wala na makita e. Kaya ingat lang po,” tourist Jason Cruz added.
Light rains accompanied the heavy ashfall in the area, leaving windshields completely covered.
A Good Samaritan took the initiative to wash the mud off passing vehicles.
“Basta makatulong sa kapwa. ‘Di naman kami humihingi ng kapalit e. Maraming gustong mag-abot pero di namin kinukuha,” Offie Rivera said.
