Medellin, Daanbantayan in Cebu under state of calamity due to Ursula
The municipalities of Medellin and Daanbantayan in Cebu were placed under state of calamity due to the devastation caused by Typhoon Ursula.
Total damage incurred so far in Medellin has reached P41,280,065.76.
This amount is still expected to increase since information from four barangays have yet to be validated.
A total of 3,051 families or 15,255 individuals were affected by the typhoon in Medellin.
Meanwhile, in Daanbantayan, total damage so far reached P25,050,000.
The number of partially damaged houses reached 9,765, and at least 6,000 houses were totally damaged.
The iconic "Daanbantayan" signage was blown away by Ursula's strong winds.
Many trees were uprooted and street lights were broken.
Even the flag at the municipal hall got blown away.
Many barrios were still without power, forcing some residents to go to the municipal hall to charge their cellphones for free.
Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia visited the area and met with affected residents.
The governor will not declare a state of calamity in the whole province since not all municipalities were affected.
Affected residents were given financial assistance.
Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Neil Sanchez said a person died during the height of Ursula's onslaught.
The victim was identified as Jonathan Canggas, 31, of Sitio Kamansi, Barangay Tagonon in Danao City.
Canggas reportedly went out of the house to fetch his spouse but was swept away by the river he had to cross.
Meanwhile, still missing is Ericson Gimenez, 19, a boatman of Hilantagaan, Santa Fe.
Gimenez told relatives he will put away his boat in a safe place but he instead went missing.
Meanwhile, a five-year-old boy also died on Thursday in Sitio Bangkal, Barangay Dayhagon in Medellin due to Ursula.
