Davao del Sur quake damages DepEd GenSan, triggers landslide in Sarangani

The magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Davao del Sur on Sunday afternoon caused damage to property and a landslide in other areas in Mindanao, according to a report by GMA News stringer Garry Balantay on GMA News' Unang Balita on Monday.

General Santos City

In General Santos City, an old wall of the Department of Education building collapsed.

Shoppers at the Gaisano Mall in the city immediately ran toward the exits as the ground shook and objects fell from overhead.

At KCC Mall, part of the wall outside also collapsed. Shoppers and workers were herded out of the building.

Patients at the St. Elizabeth Hospital were evacuated, with some of them still attached to dextrose units.

Still, ambulances were seen arriving at the hospital after the quake struck, carrying patients who lost consciousness.

Rescue teams and a fire truck checked on tall buildings in the city.

As of early Monday morning, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council could not give yet an assessment of the property damage in General Santos City.

Malls have been closed for rapid assessment test.

Classes were canceled in all levels for Monday in General Santos City.

Work at the local government unit was also canceled to allow the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to conduct an assessment of damage.

Sarangani

Meanwhile, a water tank in Ladol, Arabel in Sarangani collapsed after the earthquake.

A landslide also occurred in Kalon Barak in Malungon.

Motorists had to wait for an hour before the roads were cleared.

Authorities also canceled classes in all levels in Sarangani for Monday so they could check on property damage. —KG, GMA News
